Black Mental Health Today Magazine Freelance Guidelines
Black Mental Health Today (BMHT) magazine is a quarterly publication with a growing circulation of 5,000. BMHT is a leading resource for mental health professionals and advocates, particularly Black and African American, who work to promote mental wellness among Black communities. Its ultimate aim is to support mental health professionals in their work-life balance, and to promote the visibility of the work they do.
We welcome email submissions and pitches from freelance writers. We prefer articles and personal essays with relevance toward Black mental wellness. Our policy is to buy one-time print rights with exclusivity within our region and the right to post the story on our website and all social media channels. Upon publication of the magazine in print and online, writers may post their articles online. Features require thorough research, knowledge of our audience, and concise interviewing and journalistic writing skills.
Queries and articles should be emailed to the editor at connect@blackmentalhealthtoday.com. Articles are accepted in MS Word format and pasted into the body of the email with author’s name, address, phone number, and word count on the first page of the story. The editorial department reserves the right to edit for clarity, length and style. We use the Associated Press Stylebook and Webster’s New World Dictionary.
Deadlines: Three months before issue is printed
Payments: Fees vary depending on the length, depth and use of story. Assigned articles generally pay 40 cents per word. Writers are paid upon publication. We do not pay kill fees.
